Abstract
The access, use and availability of water is important for the health and economy of the country's households. Indeed, water will allow adequate hydration and will promote the correct functioning of the body. The health of the population will be at optimal levels. As a result, a country's workforce will be much more productive, which will lead to much higher economic growth. However, in rural Peru, access to this service is precarious because there are various unimproved water sources; that is, they are not protected from contaminating factors external to the environment. The international literature on this topic has shown that there are socioeconomic, geographic and demographic factors that make a household that has the choice between an improved or unimproved source prefer to use the second. However, Peruvian literature that addresses this problem is scarce. The objective of this research is to determine the main socioeconomic, geographic and demographic factors that affect the decision to use an improved water source for consumption during the years 2018-2019 using the Demographic and Family Health Survey (ENDES) by completing with the Diagnosis on Water Supply and Sanitation in Rural Areas (DATASS). A conditional fixed effects logit model is used, complemented by a probit model. The results show that the level of wealth of a household and the price for the service will be important characteristics at the time of the choice.
