Abstract
The sphere of goods in pre-Columbian Central America and the Andes are examined. Both societies were structured around “kinship relations”: the sphere of goods, land in particular, was based on the principle of “non-ownership” but rather sustained by those kinship relations. Both the “ayllu” and the “calpulli” may be regarded as somewhat similar organizations. This paper discusses the changes and exchanges that the arrival of Spanish conquistadors created in those societies’ ownership systems.
