Abstract
The objective of this research is to analyze the perception and valuation of the productive quality of the soil and its influence on peasant strategies of productive optimization in the district of Casca – province of Mariscal Luzuriaga, department of Ancash. To this end, it was proposed to use a mixed methodology: On the one hand, surveys of a significant sample of the community members were used as quantitative tools. On the other hand, as qualitative tools, analysis of different sources, bibliographic documents related to the subject of study, and the combination of observations, data collection, interviews and photographic records; considering as a population the community of Virgen de la Candelaria de Vilcabamba which, according to the directory of peasant communities, has a population of 1,545 community members; The sample was defined by 80 active peasants settled in different levels of the Quechua natural region (10 peasants for each sector). The analysis of the communal perception of the productive quality of the soil in the peasant community reveals a variety of factors that influence the way in which the community perceives and values this vital resource. The results show that farmers consider the quality of the soil resource as "regular" and that this low quality does affect crop yields, since production has decreased, which is a concern for the community members because they allocate this production for self-consumption.
