This research is focused on the study of female executives in the corporate governance of entities in the Peruvian Financial Sector. For such purpose, a qualitative analysis was performed on 27 cases of female executives who hold corporate governance positions in these entities, in order to describe their demographic profile, education, labor and family backgrounds, the reasons that have driven them and the obstacles they have faced. As part of the investigation process, it was found that female executives who are part of the corporate governance system in the Peruvian Financial Sector are mostly married with children, and declared that they felt motivated by an urge to strive for professional achievements, as well as the possibility of improving their families’ quality of life. The female executives are not conscious of the obstacles they face; however, they describe episodes involving barriers and discrimination in their professional careers during the interviews. Furthermore, during the fieldwork, other factors were identified in addition to those originally included in the investigation questions which have enriched the investigation, such as suggesting actions to be promoted in order to foster women’s participation in corporate governance in the sector. Although the Peruvian Financial Sector has been adopting good corporate governance practices, the investigation results show that female executives’ participation in corporate governance is still rare, with local banks with European parent companies accounting for the highest number of female executives. Finally, the research attempts to contribute to the existing knowledge on a topic that has been the subject of very few previous publications in Peru, particularly in the financial sector, in order to promote women’s growing participation in the country’s economic and social development
