This research aims to explore and understand the emotional experience of the caregivers of institutionalized preschool children who live in Centros de Atención Residencial (CAR) in Lima Metropolitana. To do this, the study was conducted from a qualitative approach, considering the descriptive phenomenological analysis of interviews of 12 caregivers from 3 CAR in Lima Metropolitana, through a semi-structured interview guide that explored their subjectivity. The results show that the emotional experience of institutionalized preschool caregivers involves objective components, such as physical conditions of working in a CAR; and subjective components, such as the emotions generated by the task of caring for child populations in a state of vulnerability. The emotional experience, as a result of integration of both dimensions, configures the meaning that being a caregiver of institutionalized children has for them: fulfilling the role of being a mother to the children they care of.
