Abstract
The following research uses a qualitative approach to gain knowledge regarding the experiences of termination of the analytical process in a group of eight former patients. Analysis of results shows the following themes: Termination prelude; The last session; The affects in the final phase; and Balance of the analytical process after termination. Findings characterize termination of the analytical process as a negotiation endeavour and an emotional holding period that may extend for a significant time, with intense emotional elements that require elaboration. It is proposed that work of mourning helps in understanding termination phase. Finally, ending therapy is seen by participants as an act of affirmation and independence, wich could explain the reluctance to return to another analytical process by some of them. Possible explanations of the above findings within psychoanalytic theory are discussed.
