This research project enquires into the local and urban processes that generate emotional communities in the post-migratory and neoliberal context of the city of Lima in the 21st century. To this end, it analyses, from a performative standpoint, the trajectory and the performances of the Waytay Cultural Centre from El Agustino district. Working class neighbourhoods in Lima, fruit of the migratory feats that unfolded in Peru since the second half of the 20th century, today are part of urban processes of neoliberal restructuring that begun in the 90s. This has had an impact on the city’s design and on the social life of its inhabitants, weakening their ability to form associations based on the production of cooperative relations on a local level. In this context, artistic and cultural groups have been cultivating initiatives directed towards mending the social fabric and revitalizing public spaces in their neighbourhoods and districts; amongst them, the Waytay Cultural Centre. By studying the Centre, this thesis seeks to identify the characteristics, processes and limitations of its performances, which tend to promote emotional communities within the organization and in the district’s public spaces.
