Abstract
The experience of having a brother has a role in psychic functioning and in interpersonal relationships. In this link, a series of socio-emotional competences are learned, among which emotional regulation is found. In this sense, the theoretical and empirical literature reviewed suggests that there would be a bidirectional relationship between the quality of the fraternal relationship and emotional regulation. The aim of the present study is to explore the relationship between these constructs in adolescents between 15 and 19 years old. For which, the instrument DERS-E (Scale of Difficulties of Emotional Regulation) is used to measure the regulation of emotions, as well as the Sibling Relationship Questionnaire (SRQ) to measure the quality of the fraternal relationship. It is found that conflict and rivalry between siblings are directly related to emotional deregulation and some of its facets. The warmth relates only to some facets and the status / power to none. Regarding the specific objectives, it was found that male participants with female sisters perceive less warmth than the rest of the dyads, while men with male brothers perceive more conflict. Participants that are older siblings perceive more status regardless of sex, and older brothers perceive more conflict in the relationship. Finally, men present higher scores in emotional deregulation.
