      Pedro Zulen y la filosofía peruana en los inicios del siglo XX

      Perdo Zulen (1889-1925) was a Peruvian philosopher who was influenced by Bergson’s French intuitionism, especially through Alejandro Deustua, as well as by American pragmatism, during a stay in Harvard University, where he familiarized himself with the works of Josiah Royce, Charles Sanders Peirce, and William James. This meeting of traditions, rather unusual at the time, enabled him to publish two books and many academic and journalistic articles of remarkable originality. This contribution seeks to present Zulen’s philosophical work and describe the Peruvian philosophical context in which it emerged.

      Indígena y abogado: el caso de José Domingo Choquehuanca de Azángaro

      This essay focuses on the political thought of José Domingo Choquehuanca, a member of a family of indigenous nobles that, from the colonial period and the first Republican century, occupied administrative, judicial, and political posts in their regional power center. Thus, José Domingo found himself in a key transitional period between the Spanish colonial system and the formation of the republic; a member of a group of intellectuals who laid a liberal juridical foundation for the newly-born nation. This study suggests that Choquehuanca preserved symbols of his seigneurial authority while following the constant changes of a politically and socially tumultuous Peru, which informed the development of his political thought in a new context of meritocracy and equality.

      Modelos tardomedievales, herencia prehispánica: hacia una intención estilística en la visualidad de Guaman Poma de Ayala

      This article addresses the issue of the presence of an artistic consciousness—and more specifically of a stylistic intention—in Guaman Poma de Ayala’s work. This dimension is explored through two axes: Guaman Poma’s relationship with late-medieval visual sources, on the one hand, and to pre-Hispanic ones, on the other. Based on his drawings in the Nueva corónica y buen gobierno (c.1615-16), as well as some specific watercolor illustrations in Fray Martín de Murúa’s Historia del origen y genealogía real de los reyes ingas del Piru (from 1596 until after 1600), it discusses why the Andean author and artist, though fully immersed in viceregal religious and cultural contexts, focused his attention not on contemporary European artistic models, such as the Mannerists, but rather on late-medieval ones. The article also reveals how certain formal characteristics of pre-Hispanic origin were to be used or abandoned. Thus, it seeks to show how Guaman Poma was able to transcend the process of formal appropriation, thus finding a visual language tailored to his historical and political ambitions.

      Las concepciones sobre el progreso y la construcción de un proyecto de nación: hacia una historia de las ideas en el extendido siglo XIX mexicano (1821-1910)

      The present article seeks to go beyond the well-worn, one-dimensional labels that divided nineteenth century societies of the independence period, providing instead an overview of the concepts of progress that spread through Mexico between 1821 and 1910, emphasizing the reception, re-elaboration, dissemination and public impact of this notion, not without briefly analyzing the economic history of the period and the effects of the policies inspired by them. The text traces the positions and stances of various thinkers and ideologists vis-à-vis the role and functions of the State in the construction of markets and distribution of wealth, seeking an archeology of thought that gets to the bottom of the transformation of the history of Mexican ideas exposed to the heat of the convolutions of the nineteenth and early twentieth century, while successfully shaping the identity of the nation-state and laying the foundations of capitalism on the basis of the influence of various trends of liberalism and the institutional framework inspired by this ideology.
