The present work focused on the synthesis and characterization of activated carbon modified with copper with the purpose of a) enhancing the properties of the coal as adsorbent material of phenolic compounds: phenol, 4-nitrophenol and 4-chlorophenol, b) evidencing the bacteriostatic property of copper-modified carbon in contact with strains of Escherichia coli. It was used as precursor seeds of aguaje (Mauritia Fleuxuosa L.f.) that is an abundant and renewable lignocellulosic material. The effect of acid functionalization of activated carbon was studied by varying the acid concentration, temperature and contact time, and analyzing its effect on the copper incorporated in the surface of the coal. The results showed a decrease in the adsorption capacity of the functionalized carbon and modified with copper. The study of the adsorptive capacity of the coal impregnated with Cu without acid functionalization was carried out considering: a) The influence of the amount of Cu incorporated, solution pH and reduction temperature. The results showed an increase in the adsorption capacity of 4-nitrophenol, a reduction with phenol and no variation with 4-chlorophenol. b) The chemisorption of the phenolic compounds in the presence of molecular oxygen (O2), resulting in an increase in the adsorption capacity of the phenol and a reduction with respect to 4-chlorophenol and 4-nitrophenol. c) Evaluation of the bacteriostatic property of copper-modified carbon which showed the inactivation of strains of Escherichia coli brought into contact. d) The kinetic study and under equilibrium conditions to evaluate the effect of equilibrium time, solution pH, mass ratio of carbon / volume of solution and adsorption temperature. The experimental results were correlated with kinetic and isothermal models. As a final result the adsorption process of the studied phenolic compounds was determined
