The purpose of this doctoral research is to examine how Peruvian transatlantic travel narratives, written in the 19th and early 20th centuries (1841-1909), resemantize and/or question the discourses and imaginaries associated with two countries that fulfilled a fundamental role in the gestation of the Peruvian identity: France and Spain. From a diverse corpus that includes the stories of Juan Bustamante Dueñas from Puno; Pedro Paz Soldán (Juan de Arona), Manuel González Prada and Ricardo Palma from Lima; and the Cusco writer Clorinda Matto de Turner, we propose to explore how the habitus of class (Bourdieu), the purpose of the trip, the sexual gender and the position that these travelers occupied in the Peruvian intellectual field shaped the different views that poured into these European countries. The heterogeneity of our corpus allows us to see the fissures that were opening in the hegemonic conceptions related to these nations, due to the emergence of new social actors, women and Andeans, as is the case of Juan Bustamante and Clorinda Matto de Turner, who they provided us with new readings of the European space. Finally, we examine how this spatial experience becomes a platform through which these travelers not only project their subjectivities, but also their intellectual and ideological projects, which, after the transatlantic crossing, were reoriented or repowered.
