Abstract
The aim of this investigation was to describe the relationship between reading comprehension and choice of operation for solving arithmetic problems in schoolchildren of both sexes who study 4th grade in a public school in Huaraz. To achieve this aim the following test were applied: arithmetic problems formulation types P.T.E.P.A. (In Spa) developed by Granados, Franco Portilla (2004) and the readers’ process evaluation battery reviewed by PROLEC-R - section of reading comprehension developed by Cuetos, Rodríguez, Ruano and Arribas (2007). Both tests obtained adequate reliability indicators according to the Alfa Cronbach scale. Regarding the sample we worked with 160 subjects from fourth grade of primary of a public school in the city of Huaraz. The global results obtained show a significant relationship between reading comprehension and the choice of operation for solving arithmetic problems in schoolchildren of both sexes. However, when making this correlation by gender, it is evident that there is a relationship in men but not in women.
