The aim of this research was to compare the level of mathematical competency in first grade students from a private school and a public school. The instrument used was the test EVAMAT-1 (García and others 2009) and a descriptive-comparative design was used. The results showed no significant differences between students from the private and public schools in the overall results of the test, nor in the results of the Numeracy and Geometry subtests. However, there is significant difference in Calculus, in favor of private school students, and in Problem solving, in favor of public school students. In conclusion, there is no significant difference in the level of mathematical competency between the two groups. Nevertheless, there are some factors that affect the qualitatively in the results. Future research should focus on these factors.
