Peru and China have a close and remote relationship that began in the colonial era of the sixteenth century. At different times, the Peruvian government has maintained a diplomatic relation with various Chinese governments, first with the Qing Dynasty, then with the nationalist China of the Kuomintang and now with the People's Republic of China. In 1971, Peru and the People's Republic of China established a diplomatic relation. The trade in fishmeal between the two countries was the main reason for establishing the diplomatic relation; yet the mutual support for Peru’s 200 mile policy, and for China’s desire to join the UN was the essential reason. This diplomatic and political event corresponded to the interest of both countries. The establishment of diplomatic relations between Peru and the People's Republic of China in 1971 disoriented the Chinese colony in Peru. In his breast the reactions were very different in several circumstances. This thesis will analyze the circumstances in which the installation of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China takes place, its impact on the Chinese community of Peru and the reasons of the discord.
