Abstract
compromiso organizacional.
Succession in family businesses is a key factor in the sustainability of the business, as well as of the family itself in the company. Although several investigations show that one of the key strategic elements in the succession process is the existence of commitment in the successor, it has not been analyzed how the development of commitment is related to the development of the successor's role in the family business, developments that occur long before the process of delegating functions from the predecessor to the successor begins. This exploratory-descriptive research, with a constructionist focus and a qualitative and intensive approach, seeks to contribute to the knowledge on the management of family businesses by developing the questions "How is the role of the successor in the family business shaped and developed?" and "How does commitment relate to this development?", which are answered through the narrative analysis of the life stories of a group of successors, and the construction of an evolutionary model of the development of this role, which includes elements and concepts related to organizational commitment.
