The study sought to identify the motivation for studying education, the experiences of insertion in the university and the factors that influenced the decision to study education in a group of students of Beca Vocación de Maestro in a private university in Lima. A qualitative design with a thematic analysis approach was employed. Nine students, four teachers and three authorities from that educational institution were interviewed, as well as a PRONABEC functionary. The results showed that the scholarship attracted not only students who always thought about studying education, but also those who thought that this was one of their options, and others who had not considered it. Likewise, it was found that these students have different kinds of motivations to choose the career; also, in the decision to study education, external factors weigh, being Beca Vocación de Maestro the main one. For these students, the scholarship became an opportunity to access higher education at a prestigious university, to contribute to the family economy, and, in certain cases, to study the career they always wanted. It was also found that the fellows went through difficulties related to the management of the scholarship that could affect their insertion in the university, but that some were attended through strategies that were implemented or improved during the development of the scholarship. The implications of policy and possible future studies are discussed.
