This study aimed to explore the experiences of 7 young women from Lima diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) between 22 and 25 years of age. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the idea of recognizing the psychosocial effects that PCOS was having in participants’ lives. The following themes emerged after analyzing participants’ responses: initial reaction to diagnosis, managing information about the condition, illness perception, medical appointments, pharmaceutical treatment, concerns for the future, patient’s role, sexual health, areas of life affected by the condition and sources of social support, self-perception, and emotional and cognitive changes. There is evidence that this condition could represent a risk for women’s mental health and that emotional stress related to the presence of diverse PCOS symptoms is present in these women’s lives. Finally, protective factors that could help prevent long-term mental health problems are identified.
