Afrontamiento y satisfacción con la vida en relación al consumo de sustancias de jóvenes universitarios

Abstract

La presente investigación tuvo como objetivo analizar la relación que tiene el consumo de alcohol y marihuana con las estrategias de afrontamiento y con los niveles de satisfacción con la vida de jóvenes universitarios. Los participantes fueron 153 estudiantes de ambos sexos, a los que se les aplicó el Cuestionario de estimación del afrontamiento (COPE-60), la Escala de satisfacción con la vida (SWLS) y el Instrumento de detección de consumo de alcohol, tabaco y sustancias (ASSIST 3.1.). Los resultados mostraron que los afrontamientos sociales/emocionales y evitativo se relacionaron directamente con el consumo, así como algunas estrategias orientadas a la tarea mostraron esta misma relación. Además, el afrontamiento religioso se relacionó con menos consumo de marihuana, mientras que la estrategia de Uso de sustancias evidenció una relación directa con el consumo de alcohol y marihuana. Por último, hubo una relación inversa entre el consumo y la satisfacción con la vida. Se discuten las posibles explicaciones de estos hallazgos, se reportan algunas limitaciones que se encontraron durante la investigación y se proponen algunas líneas de investigación futuras. Los hallazgos de este estudio podrían contribuir a entender mejor las dinámicas de problemas de salud pública, como el consumo de sustancias, y de la salud mental, que se suele dejar de lado.

The aim of this investigation was to analyze the relation of alcohol and cannabis use with the coping strategies and life satisfaction of university students. The sample consisted of 153 students of both sexes that were administrated the COPE Inventory (COPE-60), the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) and the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST 3.1.). The findings suggest that social/emotional coping and avoidant coping were associated directly with substance use, as well as some task oriented strategies were associated in the same manner. In addition, it was found that the strategy of Religious coping was related to reduced cannabis use, while the strategy of Substance use showed a direct correlation with alcohol and cannabis use. Finally, there was an inverse relation between substance use and life satisfaction. Possible explanations for these results are discussed, there are some limitations of this study that are reported and some implications for future investigations are proposed. The findings in this investigation could contribute to understand better the dynamics of public health issues, like substance use, and mental health topics, which are often underestimated and not taken into account.
