El objeto del presente trabajo no es sólo el de señalar que las ideas de Schumpeter están lejos de ser originales y que su deuda con Max Weber -tal como veremos-es considerable, sino también el remarcar las diferencias que existen entre las teorías de ambos autores, diferencias en general poco atendidas por los investigadores. Acercarnos a la obra de estos dos clásicos, cuyas trabajos tuvieron un impacto extraordinario en el desarrollo de la teoría de la democracia especialmente tras la segunda guerra mundial, nos permite enten-der mejor algunos estudios actuales acerca de cómo se comportan los líderes políticos y los votantes ,y sus influencias mutuas, que han explotado y ampliado algunas de sus hipó-tesis fundamentales.
