El cadmio, ¿su presencia nos alerta de la contaminación antropogénica?
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, 2019-11-26)
Cadmium is very scarce in nature and its presence in the environment is due to industrial development. Irresponsible waste management makes it appear in freshwaters and agricultural soils. It is very toxic and bioaccumulative, causing itai-itai disease....

Buenas prácticas ambientales en hogares de Valparaíso Metropolitano, Chile
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, 2024-04-16)
In Chile, the main issues affecting the quality of life of the population include air pollution, scarcity and contamination of water resources, degradation, loss, and pollution of soils, nuisance noise, solid waste management, and loss of biodiversity. In response to this situation, good environmental practices emerge in households, which can be characterized as simple and useful measures that individuals can adopt in their daily lives to reduce the negative environmental impact of their activities. In this context, the article presents the results of a qualitative research aimed at identifying and classifying the environmental practices carried out in households in Metropolitan Valparaíso, Chile. Methodologically, an exploratory-descriptive approach study was conducted, gathering information from 64 households through semi-structured interviews. The results show the implementation of good environmental practices in the household, related to the recycling of organic and non-organic waste, reusing organic and non-organic waste, and reducing the consumption of natural resources. It is concluded that the environmental practices developed by individuals in their households are motivated by a deep concern for environmental issues and seek to reduce the long-term negative consequences that will affect the living conditions of future generations. From an integrated perspective, the good environmental practices carried out in the household represent a silent and persevering microsocial dynamic that challenges the devastating actions of global economic, political, and technological actors regarding the use of natural resources....

¿Educación ambiental o educación para el desarrollo sostenible? El sentido ético de la educación ambiental
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, 2023-07-25)
Since the 1960s it has become clear that a development model focused on economic growth would erode environmental systems (through pollution, deforestation, soil degradation, climate change, loss of biodiversity, etc.) and exacerbate social conflicts (through violence, migration, poverty, food insecurity and other phenomena). As mechanisms to help reverse the damage and balance the relationship with nature, the United Nations formulated educational strategies aimed at harmonizing the relationships of human beings with the environment. Initially they spoke of environmental education and in later years education for sustainable development. This article reflects on the international perspective on issues such as development, sustainability, and environmental education to then dive into the concept of environmental education and its various interpretations. Furthermore, it enters the debate on “education for sustainable development” to bring out the most significant vicissitudes in the understanding of development. Finally, it addresses the importance of environmental education at school and underscores the relevance of ethics in the approach to that environmental education....

The agricultural sector is very important worldwide, in Latin America and Mexico, due to increasing population and therefore the need for food. But this sector works mainly as a linear production system, instead of a circular one. This causes the generation of large amount of waste, which can cause water, soil and, especially, atmospheric pollution if not disposed correctly. It is therefore essential to help agricultural systems to close the material cycle and thus reduce environmental impacts and obtain a higher performance in the system. This will help to knowing how to contribute to the circular economy in the agricultural sector. This article presents the study carried out with three experimental farms in the state of Guanajuato (Mexico). The farms were diagnosed qualitatively and quantitatively, the valuation of wastes already done in the farms was detected, and new valuations were proposed for each of them. An eco-industrial agricultural network was proposed between the three farms, made up of 11 entities, 7 different industrial sectors, 8 existing synergies, 18 proposed synergies, 22 different recovered or reused waste. With this network, a solution is proposed for 8 of the 10 most problematic farm wastes and contributes to closing the material cycle in them. Criteria are also given to tend to the circular economy in the agricultural sector....
