Entre el carácter y el destino: desentrañando el fragmento de Heráclito “ἦθος ἀνθρώπῳ δαίμων”

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the different lines of interpretation of Heraclitus’ enigmatic fragment 119 (ἦθος ἀνθρώπῳ δαίµων). In particular, three possible interpretations attested in Antiquity will be identified: the first would contend that 1) human ἦθος is conditioned by the δαίµων; the second, of Platonic nature, would propose that 2) ἦθος represents the divine part of the human being; and, finally, a third interpretation, which would advocate that (3) ἦθος, as the individual’s “tutelary agent” (δαίµων), determines the human being’s destiny. Without overlooking their shortcomings, it will be concluded that both 1) and 3) constitute valid readings of the fragment, whereas 2) lacks sufficient textual justification to be considered a viable interpretation. In order to support this position, an analysis of the most important words that compose the fragment will be carried out, and the different interpretations arising from ancient sources will be evaluated. This article represents a new contribution to the area of knowledge by providing interpretations of fragment 119 that, although subscribed to by several scholars, have not, until now, been critically and thoroughly assessed.

El presente trabajo tiene por objetivo evaluar las diferentes líneas de interpretación del misterioso fragmento 119 de Heráclito (ἦθος ἀνθρώπῳ δαίμων). En particular, se identificarán tres posibles líneas de interpretación atestiguadas en la Antigüedad: la primera sostendría que 1) el ἦθος humano yace condicionado por el δαίμων; la segunda, de índole platónica, postularía que 2) el ἦθος representa la parte divina del ser humano; y, por último, una que abogaría que 3) el ἦθος , en tanto que “agente tutelar” (δαίμων) de la persona, determinaría el destino del ser humano. Sin pasar por alto sus desventajas, se concluirá que tanto 1) y 3) constituyen interpretaciones válidas del fragmento, mientras que 2) carece de suficiencia justificación textual para ser considerada una interpretación viable. Para fundamentar dicha posición se procederá a analizar las palabras más importantes que conforman el fragmento y se evaluarán las diferentes interpretaciones que surgen a partir de la consulta de las fuentes antigua. Este artículo representa una nueva contribución al área del saber al ofrecer interpretaciones del fragmento 119 que, pese a que varios académicos se suscribían a ellas, nadie hasta el momento las había evaluado críticamente de manera acabada.
