Hidrología y variación topográfica de un riachuelo subantártico en la ensenada MacKellar, Isla Rey Jorge, Antártida

Abstract

Este estudio tiene como fin la presentación de los resultados preliminares del monitoreo hidrológico y topográfico de un riachuelo de la isla Rey Jorge. Para llevar a cabo el proyecto, se utilizaron dos sistemas de medición de caudales (puntual y continuo) y una estación total para el levantamiento topográfico. Se identificaron grandes fluc­tuaciones en el régimen de caudales (0-1 m3 s-1 entre el 21 de enero y 13 de febrero del 2000, en las siete secciones de muestreo y una variación volumétrica de 9 mil m3 en la topografía del riachuelo en el2000 con respecto a 1999, la cual, posiblemente, se deba a la construcción y profundización de un nuevo cauce en respuesta a los máximos caudales ocurridos a comienzo del verano austral.

The purpose of this study is to present preliminary results of the hydrologic and topographic monitoring of a small stream at the King George Island, Antarctica. Two methods were used in order to measure stream discharge: an area-velocity method using a flow meter and a Parshall flume. Also a topographical survey was made using a total-station theodolite. Great stream discharge fluctuations were identified at the seven stream sections between January 21st and February 13th, 2000. Comparison between 1999 and 2000 topographic survey showed a volumetric decreasing of about 9.450 m3 in one year. This topographic variation could be explained by the erosive capacity of the maximum discharges occurred during the beginning of the australsummer, when a new channel was built.
