    Responsabilidad Social en las MiPymes del Municipio de Sincelejo, Sucre

    El propósito de este estudio fue analizar las prácticas de responsabilidad social empresarial en las micro, pequeñas y medianas empresas (Mipymes). A través de un sistema de ponderaciones, basado en la regularidad de implementación de programas de responsabilidad social, se examinó la frecuencia y las características de los programas de RSE implementados por estas empresas. La muestra utilizada fue de 225 firmas del municipio de Sincelejo, en el Departamento de Sucre, Colombia. Para la obtención de los datos se realizó encuesta persona a persona con los propietarios de las firmas en 2014. Los resultados muestran que las prácticas utilizadas con mayor frecuencia por las empresas, están relacionadas con el fomento del bienestar social de la comunidad y de los empleados, mientras que las actividades de gestión en la dirección operativa y en el uso de recursos ambientales se implementan con menos regularidad por las empresas. Los hallazgos son relevantes para evaluaciones posteriores sobre el manejo de prácticas socialmente responsables en las Mipymes Colombianas y de otros países en vías de desarrollo.

    Determinants of doctorate holders’ job satisfaction. An analysis by employment sector and type of satisfaction in Spain

    In this study we analyze the determinants of job satisfaction of doctorate holders in Spain. Specifically, we consider overall job satisfaction as well as basic and motivational satisfaction following Herzberg’s typology (based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs). Using data from the Spanish Survey on Human Resources in Science and Technology of 2009, representative of the Spanish doctoral graduate population, we develop an analysis by gender and institutional sector (university and non-university) where employees are employed. We propose OLS regression to identify the determinants of basic and motivational satisfaction at job as well as an ordered logit model for overall job satisfaction. Results do not allow us to confirm Herzberg’s differentiation for the Spanish PhD holders, since factors related with basic motivation (such as salary or working conditions referred to ‘safety’) have a bearing on all types of job satisfaction (not only the basic one as expected). Likewise, results do not show significant differences by gender. However, it seems that these ‘basic’ needs are less important for the job satisfaction those PhD holders working at the University. Our results seem reasonable for a Southern European country where monetary conditions in labor relations are worse than in other developed countries.

    The impact of R&D subsidies on R&D employment composition

    In this paper we examine the impact of subsidies granted at national and regional levels on a set of R&D employment variables and, specifically, we seek to identify the existence of the behavioural additionality effects of these public subsidies on firms’ R&D human resources. We begin by assessing the effects of public funds on R&D private expenditures and on the number of R&D employees, and then focus on their impact on the composition of human resources engaged in R&D as classified by occupation and level of education. The data used correspond to the Spanish Technological Innovation Panel for the period 2006-2011. To control for selection bias and endogeneity, a combination of non-parametric matching techniques are implemented. After ruling out the existence of crowding out effects, our results show that R&D subsidies increase the number of R&D employees. However, no increase is found in the average level of qualification of R&D staff members in subsidized firms. All in all, the effects of public support are heterogeneous being dependent on the source of the subsidy and the firms’ characteristics.

    Public support for R&D, knowledge sourcing and firm innovation: Examining a mediated model with evidence from the manufacturing industries

    The aim of this study is to examine how firms realize the benefits associated with public support for R&D programs. To do so, this research proposes and tests the hypothesis that the level of knowledge sourcing applied by a firm during the innovation process mediates the relationship between granted R&D subsidies and a firm’s innovative performance. Using a panel of Spanish manufacturing companies, the findings provide evidence to indicate that the degree of firms’ investments in intramural R&D and the levels of openness in their innovation serve as mediating mechanisms between R&D subsidies and firm innovation, as measured by patent application and new product introduction counts. The study advances the literature on innovation management and technology-policy evaluation by showing how firms use their knowledge-sourcing strategies to exploit opportunities provided by public intervention.

    Knowledge and Participation of Barranquilla’s Citizens in the Colombian Stock Market

    This paper empirically examines the level of awareness and participation of citizens of Barranquilla in Colombia's stock market. To do this, we surveyed 800 individuals distributed in five locations in the city. Using a logit model type factors influencing the level of market knowledge of small investors as well as the variables that influence the probability of investment are estimated. The results show that the income range is the variable with the greatest influence on the level of knowledge and investment in the stock market. Finally, it is confirmed that this is a market with very specific characteristics in which, in most cases, enter those with a full knowledge of investments they put in.
