Archaisms have always been present in the Dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy and efforts have been made to preserve and incorporate them. The twelfth edition stands out for its abundant increase in these words to make up for the lack of a specific dictionary of archaisms. Those that were included were mostly formal variants of words in use and they had two characteristics: they were documented for the first time in this edition of the dictionary (others that had appeared before and later removed were reintegrated) and they are preserved even in the latest edition. This occurred at a time when the rehabilitation of archaisms was being promoted as a way to preserve tradition, promote proper language use, and counteract neologisms and loan words.

This work analyzes the intertestimonial variation that is documented between the terms brocal and cospe in a passage from the Crónica sarracina that requires amendment and whose investigation reveals not only lexical and variational data, but also the intertextuality that is present in certain chapters of the work by Pedro de Corral (ca. 1430). The documentation of these terms reveals that the primitive Amadís is one of the main sources for Corral’s text and that the author relies on this work’s initial version forsome fragments and, consequently, for the reproduction of these words, which have been distorted in textual tradition and barely documented in texts of the time with the registered sense and form.

This paper analyzes, from a glotopolitical perspective, the establishment and functioning of a Spanish-Putonghua bilingual public school in the city of Buenos Aires. This institution and its implementation demonstrate a concern for the educational inclusion of Chinese migrants and their descendants, as well as for the preservation and learning of the immigration language. Throughout this article, we will show how Putonghua is constructed both as a language of instruction and as an “object language” in legal regulations, classes, and in the speeches of officials. We argue that the motivation underlying the creation of this school is the increasing importance that Putonghua has gained globally in recent years.

The construction [qué + swear word] appears in different discursive contexts. It can act as an independent statement, as a complex interjective variant, in reactive interventions, or is integrated within an utterance, occupying peripheral positions. In the latter context, it develops procedural contents similar to those of discourse markers: specifically, it develops a meaning of reformulation and another one of reconsideration, in which it adds an argumentative counterorientation to what is expected by the listener. This paper analyses its functions from a linguistic-pragmatic perspective which takes into account the macrosyntactic functions of the construction.

The Uruguayan writer Blanca Luz Brum was an active part of the cultural and socio-political life of different Latin American cities for several decades. However, her ideological estrangement from socialism, as well as her intense love life, earned her disqualification and oblivion. The aim of this paper is to rescue her figure through the analysis of her texts published in the magazine Amauta between 1926 and 1929, taking into account the author’s poetics and the role that her poems occupy in the magazine. The study will reveal the double aspect of her poetry: one that is political, gimmicky and has a propagandistic and mobilizing character; and the personal one, which is more complex, deep and reflects the most intimate side of Blanca Luz.

One of the issues addressed in possible worlds semantics is the accessibility relations of fictional worlds, that is, how these worlds relate to the real world. This paper takes the works by authors such as Kendall Walton, Marie-Laure Ryan and Tomás Albaladejo as a starting point to examine those features of the fantastic which constitute accessibility relations in two ways: those that shape the world out of real entities, such as the representation of macrostructural models or the incompatibility of elements, and those that intervene in the access of fictional entities to the real world, such as the presentation of verisimilitude and authentication.

Metapoetry is a particular fiction exercise discussed in this article with the purpose of testing new approaches to the avant-garde of the early twentieth century and its presence in Peruvian poetry. The chosen case is that of César Vallejo and the explored text is “Un hombre pasa con un pan al hombro” (‘A man passes by with a loaf of bread on his shoulder’), a poem in which the ideas about language, knowledge and culture do not resist any analysis that justifies their functioning as guarantor resources of the civilization, which therefore demands the reader to rethink the fictional nature of this poem.

The main objective of this sociolinguistic research is to trace various perceptions regarding intonational variation in different localities from rural and urban contexts in the province of Melipilla, Metropolitan Region. The methodology incorporated an ethnographic approach to the different localities, where a perception survey was administered to 87 subjects, both men and women, between the ages of 18 and 70.This article presentsthe most relevant results regarding perceptions and self-perceptions about specific language uses in these communities and their spoken identity, understanding that these entities are becoming closer to each other due to the increasing urbanization of rural areas near Santiago, Chile (Céspedes 2017).

Despite the existence of performing practices that have explored the relationship between autobiography and fiction for a long time, theatrical autofiction has only recently begun to be studied. This is partly due to the particularities of theatrical communication that make traditional models of analysis, designed for narrative texts, unable to explain the dynamics of dramatic autofiction. This article proposes to rethink the theory of theatrical autofiction based on the inscription of the autofiction reading pacts in the conventions of theatrical reception. The discussion is based on the analysis of the dramaturgy of Sergio Blanco, whose work essentially explores the possibilities and limits of autofiction on stage.

The verbs expressing motion+path and locative verbs in Wichi/Weenhayek (Mataguayan language family) contain two arguments in their lexical meaning: the entity acting as the Figure and the Ground with respect to which the location, path, or orientation of the Figure is conceived. However, they differ in the way this semantic structure is syntactically expressed. The entity acting as Ground is mandatorily explicit in locative verbs, whereas it is never expressed in predicates with motion+path verbs. This paper discusses these syntactic differences between the two groups of verbs. Likewise, since the syntactic expression of the entity acting as Ground is formally similar to that of the object of transitive objects, we also analyze syntactic tests for the recognition of these two types of complements.

Passivization in Spanish takes (active) clauses with a direct object and turns them into (passive) clauses in which that argument behaves as a subject. English allows secondary passives as well, in which the constituent that is promoted to the subject position is the goal or beneficiary argument of ditransitive predicates such as give: Peter was given a book. Although Spanish does not have this kind of passives, this paper discusses some data on ditransitive verbs whose passives allow the promotion of goal or beneficiary arguments. It is shown that there are at least two major types with differentiated characteristics: verbs that enable a construction we call beneficiary accusative and verbs that trigger what we call lexicalized goal-passives.

The following research describes argument marking in the Huarpean languages —Millcayac and Allentiac—, focusing on the determination of their marking locus and alignment type. With respect to the locus, several systems are observed coexisting in the synchronic stage described by Luis de Valdivia. In both languages, a split alignment is observed in flagging constructions, between nominative-accusative and neutral, and secundative and indirective alignments. In the indexing constructions, a nominative-accusative alignment and one of secundative type are recognized. Finally, regarding the diachronic process, we propose that the Huarpean languages might have exhibited a predominance of marking through flagging, and that they would have gradually incorporated argument indexing construc-tions at the time they were documented by Valdivia, possibly as a result of the influence of surrounding Andean languages, especially Quechua. In fact, from this language, they would have received the case marker -ta and the object morpheme pu-.

Despite the shortness of his life, Abraham Valdelomar (Ica, Peru, 1888-Ayacucho, 1919) managed to write an extensive and varied body of work in which he cultivated almost all literary genres. It is significant that in this work he barely touched upon the topic of Afro-Peruvian culture, despite belonging to this ethnic-racial affiliation himself. Valdelomar explores this theme in “Reportaje al Señor de los Milagros” (1915) and “Sobre la psicología del gallinazo” (1917). The purpose of this article is to analyze the representations of Afro-descendants and their culture presented in both texts. Our hypothesis argues that these representations do not stray from the protocol of descriptions that the West has used to solidify the identity of Afro-descendants, which are defined as hierarchically inferior beings.
